My “LOST” TV show theory

Posted by Hyun on May 6th, 2007

This journal entry will be totally useless and worthless. Ok, I never watch TV. But I do go out of my way to see "LOST" TV series on ABC. As the season 3 is close to finish, the series is getting awfully good. I am sure there are tons of theories about the show by many viewers. Here is my theory of what I think LOST is about.

lost image
For sometime, I was thinking the writers of the Lost series were writing aimlessly and the storyline was going nowhere. For the most of the season 3 episodes, I was getting a bit frustrated and feeling a bit "lost". But the last few episodes are starting to bring the storyline together and actually starting to make sense ... I think. After seeing the last couple of episodes where a woman who crashed from a helicopter onto the island hired to find Desmond said that the flight 815 crashed in Indonesia and not the Fiji Islands. She also said that the complete airplane was found with all the passengers' bodies inside. That was a pretty good clue about where this story is finally going. Also, the appearance of John Locke's father was a surprise but gave a huge clue of what this LOST island is all about. It seems like all the characters are keeping a skeleton in their closet and are mysteriously forced to face them on this LOST island.

So what is this place? I think this LOST island is some sort of "purgatory" like place. All the characters are dead and they are in this place where they are being judged about their past. A gateway between heaven and hell perhaps? The crashed victims are being judged. By what? I have no clue but the story is getting ever more thrilling. Many things that happened on this island are just too weird and surreal. For them to be in another dimension of place would make sense that all of these nutty things are happening to them. I think the others are "Angels" who have been living in this purgatory forever. This would explain the knowledge the "others" have of the airplane crash victims in a file. There are some good angels like "Juliette" and there are bad angels like "Ben". Looking forward to see more clues to the answers in the coming episodes.

I am curious to see what your theories about the island are? Do share them.

I just finished watching the final season, and i must say that i have a complete theory on the LOST serie.
What you wrote was a theory many gave during season 2 but i remember that damon lindelof said it wasnt a purgatory.

I think that the island is a time door on earth, lets say that they are experiencing a loop they are going thru over and over (dont know how many times they did this loop), but over the course of the loop they have the chance to change things and experience their life again.

Remember when desmond had this flashforward? and was with penny and remembered vaguely what happened to him on the island soon after he blew the hash? Remember what it was? its simply him remembering one of his past loop and trying to do thing differently.

The flash forward he is experiencing then everytime he sees charlie die are loops from the past where charlie really die, and that way he remember how to change the loop and avoid the death.

And remember the season finale? all the last ep was about a big flash forward about jack after they got rescued. Jack tells kate that they werent meant to get rescued and they didnt had to mess with the loop itself.

I think the island is a door between the loop or a place where time isnt moving.

Hi Adam,
Just got back from a b-day vacation and sorry about the slow response. Whew, I got some catching up to do in the season’s finale! You spoke like a true, logical but imaginative programmer! ;)

I had to stop reading your comment all the way through because it sounded like a spoiler for me. I will have to finish reading your comment after I watch the show. Geez, we are such geeks. :P

All I can say is, “poor Charlyyyy”! Very saddened by his death even though I suspected he would die anyway. I will miss him. I am singing ... “C’mon everybody”. Tsk, tsk and now we got to wait til January of 2008????!! Bummer.

I think something will happen in beginning of Season 4 that will switch everything, dont know how to explain this.

A common theory, but a good one none the less. I would have agreed with this theory until I saw Jack in what I believed to be the future, so I think they do manage to get off the island.

Hi Padraig, yes this theory is apparently over assumed. I guess the The Lost writers picked up on this common theories and threw us a curve ball with the future flash forwards thingy! I have to admit, it is very David Lynchesque.

Hi. Been reading all the theories of Lost .

Haha. I’ve had the privilege of watching Lost from season 1 to season 3 finale, all at one go. Borrowed from my friend.

But at the end of it, I felt that I’ve wasted my time!

yes the story’s very exciting, intriguing, and suspenseful. Keeps you glued to the screen. I couldn’t put the series down.

But after 3 WHOLE seasons, I was hoping they’ll start answering most of the questions in the movie. Instead, more questions crop up. And the audience gets more confused.

It’s so irritating! As in, it’s so good but I JUST WANNA FIND OUT THE TRUTH!

Haha.. that’s my two cents worth anyway. Thanks.

Cool website! Very inspiring.

sDf, Thank you so much for your lovely comment! Wow! You watched all 3 series in one gecko?! Actually, I got turned on during the mid-season of season 2 when a friend lent me the season 1 and watched in 1 week and I got totally hooked. So I can relate. I hope the season 4 provides some indication of what’s up with the crazy plot.

The (Series final) of the third Season of Lost, was Confusing, the mysterious way the Episode ended,we got five things ,we couldn’t find out
1- Who was dead?, & Jack went to his furenal?,& Why the hell didn’t Kate want to go to this Furenal?
2-Who is waiting for kate?, & wondering where she is?, Is it “Sawyer”?, Or who?
3- What’s with Naommi?, Is she bad or good?, Did she have the beginig of an end like Ben said?, What happened to them?
4- Why did Jack end the episode by saying , “We weren’t supposed to come back?, what really happened there on the island?
5- How did Walt appear of the Nowhere to Locke, telling him he has work to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I’m waiting so much to watch the fourth season to see what happens
