I too have tried many web hosts over the years and didn’t find one I was really happy with until I recently settled on MT’s DV. I’m comfortable managing a server - to a point - and the DV system fits into this level nicely.
Actually, and this is embarrassing, but over the past 18 months I’ve been with Site5, Black Sun, HostMySite, CrystalTech, TextDrive, IndexCore, pMachine Hosting (now Engine Hosting), Planet Argon and finally, MT GridServer, which was a nightmare. Phew!
Transferring 10+ db-driven sites back and forth is a huge pain in the butt. I’m pretty happy in my new home :)

Yes, I feel your pain in moving all the files from server to server. I was there too. Looks like you have tried all of the hosting company I wanted to try like TextDrive or Engine Hosting. I am curious why you switched over to MT’s DV from such notable hosting companies? I tried to sign up for the MT DV as well but their sign-up process was too slow and I settled for Servint. They are the best in performance and service so far I have ever experienced! I am very happy with my decision thus far… knock on wood. :)

Going through the list above in order, here’s why I left each: Site5 (like you, too much downtime); Black Sun (no ability to use multiple-domain email accounts); HostMySite and CrystalTech (no multi-site hosting; have to buy additional accounts); TextDrive (a set of admin panels that only the most hardcore of geeks would like); IndexCore (went out of business!); Engine Hosting ((no ability to use multiple-domain email accounts); and Planet Argon (slow tech support and regular file permission errors). MT DV gives me the control I want with a not-so-bad control panel in Plesk. The GS admin is much nicer aesthetically but you trade up-time for pretty buttons.

It seems like all the best designers are on MT DV. I heard nothing but good things about it. Too bad my experience with MT GRID was so bad. I will keep my eyes on MT DV if things get bad on my side. But for now, I am super happy with Servint. I also love the Plesk CP. Thanks for sharing your views Geoff!! I think you can consider yourself an expert in hosting woes and tribulations. :)

I have an account with servint, sometimes the load can be more than 5 seconds, i dont know if its because i have too many DBs on this VPs, could you tell me the specification of your server? and what kind of site you hosts on it? im really happy with servint and their support but their performance arent very good as i expected, but maybe im having high expectations than cannot delivered.

Hey there Adam! Sorry about the slow response. I was super busy. Just want to respond to your comment. I am on Servint’s “Essential” plan. Which plan are you on? This site is heavily based on contents from DBs. Yes, it will run a little slower than sites with less dynamic content. I also have content being pulled from Flickr, Amazon, and Google. Sometimes, these datas slows down the load times I noticed. If you use FF, look at the status bar bottom left of your browser and you will see the culprit slowing down your load times. But mostly, I have no means to change services. If anything, I may upgrade to Servint’s Signature plan. :-)

Im on Essential and moving to the signature, it may be because of the RAM, we tracked down the routing and found out that it was excellent, we will give it a go and tell you whats up with that.

Good luck on the upgrade. I took a look at your “Octabox” site and it looks very interesting. I will keep my eyes on ya. Please do keep me posted on how your new server handles your web app.

Also, dont forget that most of the VPS come with the standard features and its up to you to optimize them, with some experience you can sometime lower the RAM by 60-70%.
Anyway, i hope you are using some tools such as VPS and VPSinfo which monitor your VPS and give you the exact usage of RAM,load,processes and more…

Sounds interesting. You obviously have some serious fu skills in terms of the server maintenance. Can you suggest any article on the subject on these tools you mentioned?

funny! I made some of the same decisions you did. I was and still an at Dathorn for shared hosting. I then tried out Mosso due to the same article but quit after 2 days of a horrible experience. You cannot really resell their service. I then ended up at Servint with a VPS. I also am an EE addict and use it for all my sites now. (just joined your Face Book Group)

Ha ha that’s awesome! I just set up the EE addicts group on Facebook few days ago and started to feel lonely there. Glad you joined! Let’s build a small empire there now, shall we? (Followed by an evil laughter! :-P) I feel pretty secure in terms of my Servint set-up now. I have yet to worry about any server related issues more than 4 months now! Woo hoo, more time to play! Maybe we should also open up “Servint” addict group on Facebook too! ;-)

My own site puls several client sites are hosted at engine hosting, which you may have heard of now that you’re running EE as CMS.
Fast, secure servers, everything you could ask for as a developer and top notch and fast support.
In fact they are now my de facto recommendation for nay new client that does not yet have hosting…

Thanks for the word! I am sure Engine Hosting kicks major butt in support. I experience awesome support from them over at EE so I am sure it is just as good over at EHosting.

I hosted with many different hosting companies until now. I made the experience, that problems can occur, when a hosting company is taken over. But this is something you cannot predict. And check in hosting forums about their reputation before.

In search of a perfect hosting company
I have been in search of a home in the cyberspace to reside my web files for about a good 10 years now. During the .com burst, I so wanted to be part of it. So I quickly signed up with the first hosting company I saw.
I was de-virginized by Valueweb into the world of hosting. I started out paying $10 per month for 200MB per month (I can't exactly remember the correct specification) for a shared hosting. Today, this kind of pricing scheme would be considered ludicrous. I quickly used up my resources and was forced look for a bigger server. Then I moved onto another shared server from Interland with slightly bigger specification. I could not remember what my plan was but again, I needed to look for a bigger solution. I have to say their support and performance was very good considering I was running only static websites.
The next cyber home was Futurequest. They were extremely reliable in the server performance and pretty good support staff. And spent few years with them. I even installed first database driven website using Mambo. Of course, Mambo has been upgraded to Joomla now. Eventually, clients started to ask me for hosting services. This was something new and thought at the time, "how could this be possible"? Due to its limitation of Futurequest, I had to look elsewhere again. I found Site5. They have incredible value for the money you are paying. Able to host multiple websites for clients, friends, family and what have you. Their tech support was amazing! They averaged 5-15 minutes response per request. They also had beautiful Control Panel to manage my websites. Due to their support for Ruby On Rails, encouraged me to start learning the framework. But their server performance was not as good as their support. Just too much down time. I am sure they had much improved now.
Next up was Dreamhost. Whom I still keep around due to their incredibly generous server space and bandwidth they provide for the money! Despite their often down time and sometimes slow performance, I did not want to give up the account due to their generous server specs. However, I took off all my important websites and moved them to the Media Temple's GRID Server inspired by an article written on TechCrunch. I think I was like their 1st GRID customer. I jumped on it right after reading this article. Big mistake. I should have waited until the MT's new product proved itself. I was a customer for few months and with MT, never experienced a smooth uptime or performance. There always seemed to be problem with MySQL cluster resulting in slow response or downtime of the server's performance. I know they had fixed all of their issues recently. Their support staff have been by far one of the best I have ever experienced. Able to talk to a real person on the phone was a huge plus for me. However, the load time averaged about 9 secs to 40 secs. Due to its some flaws of the new MT's Grid's server, I moved onto Mosso due to a article I read from 31Three's blog. Also by reading Mosso's website's promo materials got me very excited to give them a try... for a 1 whole month. I also never had the uptime and the speed performance promised by Mosso's website promo verbiage. Again, I experienced great support staff, always there to help via phone, chat, forum...etc. Due to the server performance not meeting my expectations, I had to leave. My clients and I couldn't work with 9 secs to 25 secs loading time. And for $100 per month, I certainly expected 1-5 secs.
Finally, this week, I decided to take matters into my own hands and do some research in finding a good hosting provider for me. I lurked into Webhostingtalk.com and read the forums for positive reviews and experiences from the actual customers. After several hours, I found Servint. After pondering for a day and even asking questions on the forums, reassured me that Servint VPS is the choice to host my projects. For now, I feel like I am home at last! By far the best support (via phone and online ticket system) I ever dealt with! Mostly, Servint's server performance's speed load time has been 1-4 secs on average on database driven sites! The static sites load instantaneously! Their online ticket response time is less than 5-10 minutes. Their phone staff are incredibly knowledgeable and speedy in troubleshooting. I can finally be at rest and not think about my hosting woes and just focus on what I do best which is design and development. I cannot recommend Servint any higher. I also use Dreamhost as my back-up and testing like Ruby On Rails... etc. So... how happy are you with your host?
